My friends at Second Baptist in Houston, the Young family, one of which had me arrested, and their lawyers leveraged this phrase for their advantage today in court. It’s called ecclesiastical abstention, and you need to understand it if you care about transparency and accountability.
Ecclesiastical abstention is a legal doctrine rooted in the First Amendment. It exists for a good reason: to keep the government from controlling the Church. Courts aren’t supposed to decide theology, appoint pastors, or tell Christians what Scripture means.
But here’s the problem...
