A new report from ABC News suggests that charges against Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz could be coming in the next few weeks as the investigation continues. The rationale behind this claim is that the investigation has intensified, and cooperating witnesses are giving up more and more information about Gaetz's activities. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains what's happening.

According to a recent report from ABC news, charges could be coming within the next few weeks for embattled Republican Congressman Matt Gaetz. The reason that the folks at ABC seem to think the charges could be on the way is, is, is because of course, as we know, you've got all these cooperating witnesses, Joel Greenberg, obviously being the big one. And Greenberg has said that he has evidence that links Matt Gaetz to these particular crimes. Some that he's been accused of, maybe it's some we don't know about, but either way Greenberg says he has evidence, not just his own, you know, personal recollection, but he has evidence that Matt Gaetz engaged in criminal activity. And given what we know from the, I guess cooperation, you would call it, of Matt Gaetz's ex-girlfriend, Gaetz could also be looking at potential obstruction of justice charges.

But either way, ABC says this could happen within the next few weeks. And to be honest, reports from about a month or two ago said that if Matt Gaetz makes it through the summer without being charged with anything, he's likely not going to be charged with anything. And even though, you know, I understand we got, we got a lot of summer left here, the clock is ticking and they've been looking into Matt Gaetz for quite a while now. As we all know, this investigation did actually start last year, late 2020, possibly even earlier than that. So they've had time. Greenberg's been cooperating for awhile now. The girlfriend only recently, or ex-girlfriend, only recently started cooperating, but they've got a lot of other evidence. They've got the Venmo receipts, they got the PayPal receipts. They've got all of this.

The question is, is it enough to definitively link him to a crime? As much as we would all like for it to be, it's not always that easy in the eyes of the law. If you can't explicitly prove that this is a crime or linked to a crime, you don't have charges that could stick and that could be what we're looking at with Matt Gaetz. You know, in spite of all of the evidence against him, this guy may still not even be charged because it is difficult to definitively prove that these things that we're seeing are in fact criminal. That's where the cooperation, excuse me, of the witnesses comes in. They try to make a little more sense of it for the prosecutors and investigators. And ABC news seems to think that this is happening right now, these cooperating witnesses are putting the pieces together and we could see some charges against Matt Gaetz in the near future. I'm not going to hold my breath on it, but I am going to hope for the best with it.
