The Republican Party has put themselves in a horrible position: They want Donald Trump to energize his base to vote for them in the midterms, but they also don't want him attacking other Republicans as he does it. Unfortunately for them, they can't have it both ways, and Trump absolutely cannot be contained when he feels that someone isn't being loyal enough to him. Republican strategists are now concerned that this in-fighting could cost them a shot at retaking Congress in the midterms, and Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins explains how that might play out.

One of the things I love about my job here is that if you do it long enough, everything starts to basically repeat itself. And there's been one story that's actually been repeating itself in the news cycle every couple of weeks, and sure enough it's back. And that story is Republican strategists freaking out behind the scenes, worrying that Donald Trump is going to cost the Republicans the midterm elections. And it's a legitimate fear for these Republicans. After all, they have more seats to defend in the Senate. You know, they've got to gain, what is it like six, seven seats in the House in order to have the slim advantage. They would love to see a red wave, but they've got more to defend, so they have more money to spend, that they have to spend, I should say. And that also makes them more vulnerable, at least in the Senate, to Donald Trump's, let's call it his ridiculousity.

You know, when he goes out there and looks like he's wearing his pants backwards on stage, even though Snopes says he's not. When he says stupid things. When he picks fights with incumbent Republicans who are up for reelection in 2022, like Lisa Murkowski he recently went after, that freaks Republicans out. And that is actually one of the things they're freaking out about now, because if Donald Trump continues to go out there and not just make a fool of himself, that, that's kind of a small part of it. But if he continues to attack these incumbent Republicans, they might be doomed. Here's the thing. They want him involved and they've put themselves in this really horrific situation because they want him involved. They want him to energize his base, to go out there and vote for these Republicans so they can retake their majorities and then do nothing good for the American public, nothing good for the American public.

But they don't want him actually out there doing things. We want your base, but could you just shut the hell up and not say anything for the next, I don't know, 18 months, maybe 19 because you're killing us. But here's the thing. Trump's not going to shut up and we know Republicans are not going to stand up to him and say, listen, we want your support. We want your base. We want your money. We want your name. But, eh, we don't want you doing anything. And to be honest, you can't do that to somebody. They've put themselves in this position though. They deserve all of the horrible things happening to them right now because it's by their own creation. Now these Republicans, without Trump in the picture, could probably cruise to an easy victory in the midterms. Let's, let's, let's get that completely clear right now. They're doing a good enough job of obstructing the Democratic agenda to where they can go to the public and say, the Democrats have done nothing for you. Look at how useless they are, even though they're the ones who made them useless.

But either way, the public doesn't pay attention to that stuff. We'd like them to, but they don't. So they're going to sell it as the Democrats are useless, put us back in power, let us curtail the socialist policies and yada yada yada. And they would likely win. Historically, yes, as I've said a million times, the party that loses power typically regains it in the midterms, blah, blah, blah. So they were already on the path to victory.
