4:19Now PlayingFlorida governor Ron DeSantis gave an absolutely chilling speech in Pennsylvania this past weekend while campaigning for an election-denying Republican candidate. DeSantis went on about fighting "woke" in schools, businesses, government agencies, and other places - a speech that gave many people a reminder of what happened in Germany that kickstarted World War II. Ring of Fire's Farron Cousins discusses this.

Florida's Republican governor Ron DeSantis made trips to Pennsylvania and Ohio over the last couple days. And during one of his speeches, this one happened to be in Pennsylvania, it went viral because Ron DeSantis was using language similar to language used in the run up to World War II, basically trying to paraphrase Winston Churchill while also trying to sound like a Nazi. So here is Ron DeSantis talking about the fighting of the woke that he is engaging in here in the state of Florida. Take a look.
We can't just stand idly by why, why, while woke ideology ravages every institution in our society. We must fight the woke in our schools. We must fight the woke in our businesses. We must fight the woke in government agencies. We can never ever surrender to woke ideology. And I'll tell you this, the state of Florida is where woke goes to die.
Also worth noting that woke is apparently not the only thing that goes to die in the state of Florida, as we've also had 80,000 people die from COVID in this state because Ron DeSantis doesn't want to take it seriously. But something we should all be taking seriously is the fact that yeah, Ron DeSantis sounded exactly like a Nazi in that rant. Joshua Holland on Twitter pointed out that when you listen to that, replace the word woke with the word Jew, and then you are right back in Nazi Germany. And I think that was probably one of the most powerful images that anybody could project at this point, replace that word woke with Jew. Replace it with really any other word, replace it with black people, replace it with immigrants, replace it with LGBTQ, replace it with whatever you want, because they all basically mean the same thing.
We know exactly what Ron DeSantis is saying in that clip without him having to actually say it because woke isn't necessarily a thing. Right? Woke can refer to whatever the hell it is Republicans want it to refer to that day. Maybe it does mean black people. Maybe it means immigrants. Maybe it means women. Maybe it means LGBTQ. But whatever it means, Ron DeSantis is out there talking about fighting these people in the classrooms and in the businesses and in the government and everywhere. We'll fight 'em on the shores. We'll fight 'em in the Gulf. We'll fight 'em all the way up and down the state of Florida. Fight them. These are your fellow citizens. These are your constituents. These are the people that call Florida home. And you're actively invoking wartime imagery and language against them because you disagree with them politically.
They do not want us to exist here in the state of Florida. Ron DeSantis in that speech went full on fascist and everybody in that audience loved every second of it. Roaring applause from DeSantis' war on woke here in the state of Florida. So when you look back at those rallies that Hitler was doing prior to his takeover of Germany and even shortly thereafter and you wonder how in God's name can somebody like that rise to power? Why didn't these people stand up to stop it? Why didn't they recognize how dangerous it was? Next time you have one of those thoughts pull up that clip from Ron DeSantis and it becomes increasingly clear how easy it is for these authoritarian despots to seize power and run with it.
