6:29Now PlayingSean Hobbs, American journalist in Istanbul and editor of IstanbulVoices.org, says that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is probably the most powerful Turkish leader since the country's founder Mustafa Kemal "Ataturk." Hobbs believes that Erdogan deserves credit for the country's massive economic growth under his rule. But the economic boom has concentrated wealth in private hands, limited green spaces, and been strongest in the network of moderate Islamists from which Erdogan emerged--a network known as "green capital." Especially disturbing, however, has been Erdogan's crackdown on criticism in the press and retaliation against groups that don't vote for him. Erdogan has fined CNN Turk $2.5 billion, leading them to air a penguin documentary instead of cover the massive protests in Taksim Square. He is also building a third bridge over the Bosporus Strait named after Yavuz Sultan Salim, an Ottoman sultan who persecuted the Alevi Muslim minority.
