3:57Now PlayingSamet Atasoy, a student, teacher and translator living in Turkey's capital city of Ankara, is openly gay, and has been active in anti-government protests. He contributes to Turkish LGBT blog kaosgl.com. Samet says that the gay community often shows up to protest with the rainbow pride flag no matter the cause--the environment, women's rights--in solidarity with other social movements. He believes that the protests may not advance gay rights in themselves, but in so much as they are strengthening Turkish people's solidarity with one another and social awareness, they will mean progress for gay people too. The mayor of Ankara has said there will never be a gay mayor of Ankara because it does not represent family values. Samet believes that many Turks have never even encountered or read about homosexuality and believe it does not exist in Turkey.
