4:00Now PlayingSenate Democrats passed a farm bill with $4 billion in cuts to food stamps. Daniel Marans, #TAN EP, and Cole Stangler, a staff writer for In These Times, try to understand why this occurred if they knew Republicans would pass a farm bill with even larger cuts in the House. Typically if you want to avoid drastic cuts being proposed by Republicans, you ask for more than you want--not less. It seems like classic negotiating with themselves. Crucially, these cuts come on top of the expiring expansion of eligibility that President Obama enacted as part of the stimulus. They are not merely an attempt to offset the temporary expansion of the program that occurred earlier.
