Former Senator Olympia Snowe helped facilitate Gap, Wal-Mart and other North American retailers' non-binding safety agreement for garment workers in Bangladesh--the "Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety." Snowe's Gap/Wal-Mart is an alternative to the binding Accord on Factory and Building Safety in Bangladesh authored and negotiated by international labor and human rights groups. Rob Wohl, Campaigner for Sum of Us, is skeptical in the least. "The idea is to muddy the waters for consumers who may not know the difference between it and the more enforceable 'Accord on Factory and Building Safety in Bangladesh,'" Wohl said. Snowe was joined by fellow former Maine senator George Mitchell as part of their affiliation with the Bipartisan Policy Center, a DC think tank that gets gobs of money from...Wal-Mart.
