Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) reauthorized the Voting Rights Act as Judiciary Committee chairman in 2006, there was no tea party faction of the Republican Party to reckon with. The Tea Party has been the engine behind many of the racially-tinged voter ID laws and gerrymandering in the states, and may resist attempts to crackdown on voter discrimination. Cole Stangler of In These Times reports on what House Democrats have been saying about the prospects that their colleague Rep. Sensenbrenner will be able to lead his party behind the banner of civil rights.
