Guggenheim Museum's first full-time Black curator joins 'Start Your Day'

The first Black woman to be a curator at the Guggenheim Museum in New York now has her first curated show on display. Ashley James joined "Start Your Day" with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss her work. She said she first learned she loved art after being offered a chance to curate an exhibition during graduate school. After that, she worked at the MOMA and began her career at the Guggenheim in 2019. "It's a great honor and responsibility. I see myself in community with many peers, many mentors who I have grown from and continued to grow alongside. So, in that sense, it's a wonderful feeling and there's a lot of great work I look forward to doing," she said, citing her feat of becoming the first full-time Black curator at the institution. She said the work of Black artists inspired her love for art history and inclusivity is important. Her show, titled "Off The Record," features art pieces with historical documents like FBI files and newspaper articles.
