21:13Now PlayingTwo weeks ago, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of killing George Floyd. He's currently scheduled to be sentenced next month. Special Prosecutor Jerry Blackwell joined "Start Your Day" with Sharon Reed and Mike Hill to discuss the historic case. Chauvin's defense attorney Eric Nelson has requested a new trial, and Blackwell said he expected the move. Blackwell, who volunteered on the case and did it pro bono, said he felt the trial was a "spiritual calling" for him. "George Floyd was all of us," Blackwell said, citing how he saw the video of Chauvin's knee on Floyd's neck. Prior to the Chauvin trial, he never tried a criminal case and said he put his reputation on the line. When asked about his experience meditating, he said it helps to get rid of "stray voltage," and he encourages the Black community to try meditation to handle the stressors that come with being Black.
