The South African actress says she plays her character as an immigrant, which she’s familiar with since she immigrated to New Zealand and then Los Angeles.
“She struggles to fit, to understand her new home, deal with humans and just trying to fit in and finding her way,” Brandt says of her character. “Those were very similar feelings to what I felt when I was 17 leaving Cape Town.”
She said the show explores themes that people can relate to and that being on Netflix allows the show more freely.
