9:08Now PlayingVirginia Governor Ralph Northam signed new legislation aimed at criminal justice reform on Thursday. The new bill limits probation after serving time for a misdemeanor to one year, and five years for felonies.
Meek Mill, who has been outspoken about the new prison reform, was present for the signing of the bill. At 19, the rapper received a year-long sentence for a gun and drug case. He was on probation for over a decade.
“As you know I was found guilty of pointing a gun at a police officer,” Mill said at the press conference. It is a crime he alleges he did not commit, one that has led him to repeatedly be in jail for probation violations.
The Philly native shared how being caught in the prison cycle stopped him from continuing to help his family and his former addiction to drugs.
Northam hopes the bill will be another step toward ending the problems of mass incarceration.
