According to the Smithsonian, the month was created by President Jimmy Carter in 1979. It celebrates Black musical influences that play a part in our country's cultural heritage. In a statement from the White House, President Joe Biden said, "Throughout our history, there has been no richer influence on the American songbook than Black music and culture. Black music has shaped our society, entertained and inspired us, and helped write and tell the story of our nation."
