Three such figures were born within a 12-mile radius of each other—Dred Scott, Nat Turner and Joseph Jenkins Roberts. Scott was the enslaved black man who sued unsuccessfully for his freedom in 1857 in the infamous "Dred Scott Decision." Turner led one of the bloodiest slave revolts in American history in 1831. Roberts helped the West African nation of Liberia declare it’s independence on July 26, 1847 and was later elected the country’s first president in 1848.
