6:05Now PlayingBoard-certified psychiatrist Dr. Sue Varma joins BNC’s Najahe Sherman with insights and advice for parents as at least 1,000 schools have closed for in-person learning because of COVID-19.
A recent poll from USA Today found that a strong majority of parents support requiring universal mask-wearing and teacher vaccinations amid the surge in pediatric cases. “We were really not expecting having to go into another pandemic school year if you’d asked people six months ago when vaccines were on the horizon,” says Varma. “Children really like to have a sense of what’s going on, they like to be prepared, but they also like to be kept in the conversation when thing’s change.” Varma says while some kids will be more vulnerable and suffer from increased anxiety and mental health issues, it’s important to communicate effectively with children to help mitigate some of the distrust.
