5:07Now PlayingBNC’s Nayyera Haq, Charles Blow and Del Walters are joined by Party Politics president and founder Atiba Madyun for solemn commemoration 20 years after the 9/11 attack.
Blow was at the New York Times during the attack and sent someone to cover the incident firsthand. He recalls not knowing the towers were going to fall and says the idea is still an unimaginable occurrence. Walters chimes in, saying when the towers fell it was a “gut punch” in America that led to the complete collapse of the sense of vulnerability America had prior to that day. “We never thought that we could be attacked like that at home. We had seen what happened in 1993, but it wasn’t on the scale of this,” adds Madyun. “To see those buildings collapse, it was horrific. … There are so many different things that I think that come up about this, but the biggest thing is the idea that a plane was used as a bomb."
