2:36Now PlayingThe family of Betty Campbell, who was the first Black headteacher, or principal, in Wales, dedicated a statue of the former educator in Central Square.
Moved by Black America’s civil rights struggle, she taught her students about slavery and other aspects of Black history, including the subsequent liberation movement in the United States. Also, Campbell spearheaded a campaign to incorporate Black history into United Kingdom school curriculum.
In addition to acknowledging her contribution to education, the statue carried extra significance, as it is the first statue of a non-fictional woman in Wales.
