7:02Now PlayingA bill aimed at tackling the alarming rates maternal deaths in Black women has been brought to California Governor Gavin Newsom. The bill, named the “Momnibus”, will direct multi-agency efforts to improve maternal health, particularly among racial and ethnic minority groups.
Retired OBGYN Dr. Leslie Farrington joins BNC Live with Tashanea Whitlow to discuss the new bill as well as the reasons it impacts Black women more than any other demographic. Farrington expands on the conversation of distrust between the Black community and health care professionals.
“One significant cause is the type of care received, whether the mother or the pregnant mom is pregnant woman is being heard, when she reports complaints of chest pain or shortness of breath,” Farrington said. “For example, if the mother is not heard, which is a very common problem, then the important signs can be missed. That's why death and severe complications are occurring more, because Black women are not being listened to.”
