7:08Now PlayingResearchers at the University of Washington revealed today that more than half of police killings have been undercounted over the last 40 years.
Researchers looked at a federal database called the National Vital Statistics System and estimated that among the 31,000 Americans who died at the hands of police between 1980 and 2018, 17,000 have been misclassified in official records. Black people were 3 1/2 times as likely to be killed by police than white people.
Karin Martin, assistant professor of public policy and governance at the University of Washington, joins Charles Blow on “Prime” to discuss this study.
