2:41Now PlayingFriday, Oct. 15, marks the 55th anniversary of the Black Panther Party, and “Prime” host Charles Blow is addressing the current state of democracy in its honor.
Founded in 1966 in the wake of Malcolm X’s assassination, Blow shares that Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale co-founded the organization in attempt to unify Black America against a common oppressor. The party aimed to be guardians of the community through creating social programs, providing education and curbing police brutality, all of which was stated in the party's 10-point program. The first point being, “We want freedom. We want power to determine the destiny of our Black and oppressed communities.” Today, Blow reflects on the state of democracy and remembers those who, throughout the nation's history, were brave enough to challenge it—holding this nation accountable to the lofty ideals stated in our Constitution.
