4:41Now Playing“Start Your Day” hosts Mike Hill and Sharon Reed are joined by Army veteran Terry Budget to discuss the life and legacy of Colin Powell, who has died from COVID-19 complications. Reed says news of Powell’s stay at Walter Reed National Medical Center not being leaked to the media is a direct reflection of how much the general was respected. Budget, who worked under Powell’s control, says he’s speechless by the news. “He was what I consider the standard of what a man should be, specifically as a diplomat, but more so as a solider,” says Budget. “When I think back to my military career and all the leaders that I served under, I can’t think of a man who epitomized what a soldier should be more than General Powell.” Budget went on to say Powell was the example of what it meant to be dedicated to his country and his family. He also says you can’t be a leader and not acknowledge your shortcomings are and more importantly, not be willing to take responsibility for it—which Powell did with so much grace every time.
