6:22Now PlayingBNC’s Nayyera Haq joins “Start Your Day” host Mike Hill and Sharon Reed to share her initial reaction and feelings on the passing of General Colin Powell from COVID-19 complications.
Haq says we lost a hero, praising Powell as an icon for not only his work for foreign policy and diplomacy, but also for young Black people. A South Bronx native, Haq says Powell never forgot who he was or where he came from, which helped him be successful in crossing party lines. “He was the first Black person to lead a division of the military and then rose to the rank of effectively running all of the military branches,” says Haq. “So, he was not just the nation’s top soldier who spoke with credibility about war, he also was, in that sense, a good soldier. He was the person who able to defer two presidents, give them guidance and ultimately take their guidance and their orders as commander in chief.”
