13:03Now PlayingThe nation is mourning today after a trailblazer has passed away. Gen. Colin Powell, the youngest and first Black chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and first Black secretary of state, died this morning at the age of 84 due to COVID-19 complications.
Born in Harlem in 1937 to immigrants of Jamaican descent, Powell grew up in the Bronx. He discovered ROTC in city college and joined the Army in 1958. After two decorated combat tours in Vietnam, he ultimately rose to the highest ranks of service, his career spanning four decades serving under three Republican presidents.
There has been an outpour of condolences by leaders and former colleagues who hailed Powell as a hero, including former President Barack Obama. Powell is survived by his wife Alma and his three children. Former homeland security secretary under the Obama administration, Jeh Johnson, joined “Prime” host Charles Blow to discuss Powell’s legacy.
