9:43Now PlayingAmong the reactions to the death of retired four-star Gen. Colin Powell today, is the grim reminder that the pandemic is still not over, particularly for the nation’s elderly population.
Though fully vaccinated, Powell was immunocompromised, suffering from Parkinson’s and multiple myeloma, a blood cell cancer that destroys the immune system. The pandemic, which has claimed the lives of over 700,000 people, 76.2% of those deaths were those over the age of 65, according to the CDC. Since the Delta variant has spread, vaccinated people over 80 years old have continued to fare significantly better than unvaccinated Americans in the same age group. The reality is that elderly Americans like Powell remain at risk of COVID-19.
