3:02Now PlayingAnti-transgender hate crimes are on the rise, and the FBI says 2020 saw the highest number of reported crimes in the last 20 years, with the majority of those victims being people of color.
“BNC Live” host Laverne McGee taps correspondent Walter Morris, who is live at a transgender research center in Los Angeles. Morris says anti-transgender hate crimes increased over 30% in the last year, the majority of which are not reported. This year alone, 39 trans men, women and non-binary people have been killed due to transphobia. “Allowing some LGBT community leaders and activists to come into law enforcement, to provide sensitivity training to help law enforcement understand our community better, help service our community better,” says Shannon Gipson of the Unique Women’s Coalition.
