1:41Now PlayingIn honor of Veterans Day, there’s a renewed push to get money to the families of Black World War II veterans.
When Black service members returned from the war, they did not receive the same benefits as white soldiers through the GI Bill. Money that was meant to help transition back into civilian life, to buy a home or get an education, was denied to Black war vets.
There is new proposed legislation that would finally get money into the hands of families who were victims of this practice.
Rep. Jim Clyburn said, “Hopefully it can also begin to lay a foundation that will help break the cycle of poverty among those people who are the descendants of those who made sacrifices to preserve this democracy.”
