8:03Now PlayingBeto O’Rourke announced his campaign for Texas governor today, initiating what promises to be a fierce challenge to Republican incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott.
However, he will be facing some difficult challenges. In September, Republican state lawmakers enacted a slew of voter suppression measures, including new ID requirements for those voting by mail, empowering partisan poll watchers and barring election officials from sending voters unsolicited absentee ballot applications.
The bill also bans some newly expanded methods of voting used in the diverse Democratic Harris County, like 24-hour and drive-thru voting, both of which helped voters of color cast their ballots in 2020.
Democratic strategist Chuck Rocha, and Chris Hollins, former Harris County clerk, join Charles Blow on “Prime” to discuss O’Rourke’s impact in the race.
All this and more on “Prime.”
