Among these men was the late Sgt. Alwyn Cashe, the first Black service member to be honored with the medal since the attacks of 9/11.
He passed away in 2005 after suffering fatal injuries while rescuing fellow soldiers from a vehicle engulfed in flames. The sergeant was working as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom in Salah ad Din Province.
Cashe was first granted a Silver Star Medal, which is the third-highest honor for valor in combat.
For years, his fellow officers and former lieutenant lobbied that his recognition should be upgraded to Medal of Honor status.
