The Washington Post has compiled perhaps the most comprehensive database of Congress members who were enslavers. The database contains the names of over 1,700 Congress members who represented more than 60 political parties from the nation’s founding until well after the Civil War.
The party with the most congressional enslavers is the Democratic Party. According to the Washington Post’s research, over 600 Democratic Congress members enslaved Black people.
Additionally, 12 of the first 18 presidents enslaved Black people at some point during their lives.
