The federal holiday honors Dr. King, a civil rights leader and minister, commemorated on the third Monday in January. The campaign for a federal holiday to honor the Nobel Peace Prize winner began just after his assassination in 1968.
MLK Day has been designated as a national day of service to encourage everyone to find ways to honor Dr. King and his commitment to civil rights.
