This is the untold story of two of the Titanic's most influential survivors.

There was so much confusion in the newspapers and through wireless communications after the Titanic sank. No one knew what to believe. Like, the couple we’re talking about today. Word got back to their hometown that they were both dead. Their hometown, by the way, was Dowagiac.

Dowagiac, Michigan is a town that I had never heard of before I started doing the research for this Titanic passenger scandal for you. But it was put on the map before the Titanic ever set sail. And yes, our first class passengers from today’s story are indirectly related to the town’s boom.

Dickinson Bishop and Helen Bishop were a pair of newlyweds who were returning home on the Titanic after a several months long honeymoon. Their plan was to get off of the Titanic and have their chauffeur drive them from New York back to Michigan.

But we all know that they had to change their plans…mainly because the Titanic sank. But maybe Dickinson and Helen would be able to get back on track. Spoiler alert. They both survived the sinking.

But would Dickinson be able to survive the rumor that he only made it into a lifeboat because he wore a dress and pretended to be a woman? And if that was what people were saying about him, how would his wife feel? Helen.

And oh yeah, Helen was his second wife.

The truth is that he was only able to afford a first class ticket on the Titanic because he had inherited MILLIONS of dollars from his first wife after she died. He didn’t have any money of his own. So the truth was that people were already saying some pretty harsh things about him BEFORE he got on the Titanic.

You can imagine “using that poor dead girl’s money to galavant all over the world with his new wife. He’s sickening!”

There have been so many questions about what happened on that late night and into the early morning with Titanic.

Did the Titanic captain go down with the ship? Did he pay attention to the iceberg warnings? What time did the ship hit the iceberg? What day did the Titanic sink?

Like you've probably heard in every Titanic documentary, April 14th and April 15th 1912 are the days associated with the sinking about both are correct. Titanic hit the iceberg at 11:40 pm on April 14, then finally sunk just a couple of hours into April 15, 1912.

We'll get into a little bit of that and a lot of the stories of Helen and Dickinson Bishop.

This is a Titanic story about bad luck, bad decisions, and possibly the ugliest “woman” who got into the first Titanic lifeboat as the ship’s Lt gave the order that we all have heard about who was to get in the lifeboats before anyone else. Say it with me. “Brides and grooms first! Newlyweds first!”

Yes. Helen claimed that those were the orders that she and her husband were given. Not “women and children first.” Brides and grooms. Apparently the executives at White Star Line took holy matrimony VERY seriously, and THAT’S how Dickinson Bishop got into the first lifeboat that was loaded. A total lie and a total hot mess.
