3 BIZARRE WAYS TO EXPLORE VOCAL RESONANCE

Hi everyone! I wanted to challenge myself to film and release a video in a day. This video has a bit less editing than my other ones and is more casual. It was refreshing to make after focusing on just really long videos for awhile. I'll try do intermittent shorter videos from now on while focusing on larger works. I have a really big video in the works! :D

This video describes 3 fun and interesting ways to explore resonance.

Each of these methods can reveal the sound of the vocal tract in profound ways! All of them are created by closing off the vocal folds and velum (holding your breath) and putting energy into the vocal tract. With these sounds we can understand what the vocal tract is doing. In the video I primarily modeled the predominant resonance scaling motion used in voice feminization. However, resonance is infinite and boundless -- explore and truly have fun. Then work to target models. You'll find patterns in the sound if you listen and feel carefully.

These methods don't utilize active voice production. As such, the lungs and vocal folds are in a mostly passive state (the vocal folds are sealed though). Since these components are mostly disabled, it allows for a much easier time observing and interpreting the feeling and sound of resonance. Since there is no active voice, weight and pitch aren't factors in play. These elements can commonly get mixed up for resonance to new explorers. Additionally, these approaches all seal off the velum -- thereby blocking the flow of air into the nose. This is the state we mostly want to train resonance in (aside from nasal specific explorations). A sealed velum makes finding brighter resonance much easier and these approaches make it obvious if the velum isn't sealed.
