6:32Now PlayingOn this day 75 years ago, the leaders of Imperial Japan formally surrendered to the Allied Forces on the deck of the USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay. Known now as “VJ Day,” it is an important day for our country – marking the end of World War II in the Pacific and the start of a process that would bring democratic institutions to Japan.
But this day is also particularly meaningful to our family because Gayle’s father, James Carl Long, was a member of the Navy and served in the Pacific in the days leading up to this historic moment. We are lucky to still have many of the things he brought back with him from his time in the service.
