3:37Now PlayingWatch as U.S. Senator Roger Wicker marks Veterans Day 2020.
Today, all across our country, we will pause and thank those people who have stepped forward, donned the uniform, and served their country in the military.
At this time I often look back to the words of a young soldier named John McCrae who served with the Allied Forces in Belgium in a region known as Flanders. One day after participating in the funeral services for a fallen comrade, McCrae was so overcome with emotion at the solemnity of the occasion that he returned to his quarters and wrote the words to a poem titled, "In Flanders Fields."
Many now remember this poem as a tribute not only to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and served their country.
It goes like this:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Thank you to all the veterans who have stood forward, who have tossed the torch to us. It is ours to hold it high. And we do on this Veterans Day.
