Rene Descartes sat down one day and decided to doubt all his beliefs, in order to see what would hold firm in the face of such harsh scrutiny.
This then sparked a thought. If there was doubting and thinking going on, then there must be a doubter or thinker, and since he is the one doing the doubting, that must be him.
The statement is self-verifying. In order to think it, you have to exist.
Hence, I think therefore I am.
