This is where I think the story of Jean-Dominique Bauby can really help us out. He suffered from Locked-In Syndrome, where he was mentally sound but almost entirely unable to communicate with the external world. He lived in what many would consider to be a personal hell, but he managed to write a spectacular book about the experience. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly chronicles his struggles, his coping mechanisms, and the lessons he has taken from his condition. And I encourage you all to read his work.
