France's pension system is on the verge of collapse. However, Macron's proposed reform attempt raised a wave of protests and a general strike lasting more than 10 days.
Interestingly, Macron's plan does not include pension cuts, nor does it include an increase in the retirement age. In fact, the reason why so many people are protesting against this reform is the abolition of privileges for more than 42 professional groups.
Since the time of the Sun King, France has recognized privileges for the workers of various state-owned companies: from the Paris Opera to railroad workers. Macron wants to put an end to all this and this has generated a really harsh response in the streets. To what extent could this impact him in the next presidential elections?
