1:50Now PlayingAn accused arsonist who horrifically engulfed himself in flames while allegedly firebombing a South Australian supermarket has made a desperate bid for freedom in court. The shocking case stems from a brazen midday targeted attack on the Saray Mediterranean Market and Butchery in Torrensville, located in Adelaide's west, which occurred in October last year.
Reporting live from outside the court, Adelaide Reporter Will Lawrence detailed the severe medical state of the co-accused, identified as Cong Nguyen. Nguyen is one of three men allegedly involved in the targeted petrol bombing, which left multiple innocent store employees suffering from traumatic burn injuries. Shocking CCTV security camera footage broadcast during the segment shows the terrifying moment a fireball erupted at the rear doors of the business, catching Nguyen in the blast and forcing him to roll on the pavement to extinguish the flames.
Defence lawyers argue that Nguyen has been rendered virtually immobile, having sustained severe complications from full-thickness burns covering nearly 80% of his body. Due to his medical frailty, his legal team claims his critical injuries cannot be properly managed within a prison environment, resulting in multiple emergency hospitalizations. Consequently, Nguyen has applied for home detention bail to facilitate his recovery.
However, the prosecution remains staunchly opposed to the release. Authorities have presented a compelling case against the suspect, highlighting that he possesses an extensive, nearly 50page criminal history. Both the prosecution and the magistrate acknowledged that granting freedom to the accused would pose an unacceptable risk to the community and the multiple victims impacted by the blaze. A final decision on this controversial bid for freedom is expected next month. Subscribe for live updates on this developing case.| *Subscribe and 🔔
