Growing up with an older brother who played every sport—baseball, karate, and eventually hockey—young Kendall watched from the sidelines and decided she didn't want to just sit there. She wanted to play.
But 30 years ago, girls at the rink had limited options: they were either figure skating or watching their brothers play. Kendall's parents got her figure skates first, and while she loved figure skating, it wasn't what her brother was doing. She wanted to be on his ice sheet, not hers. After just one week in figure skates, 3-year-old Kendall cried as much as a 3-year-old can (which is a lot), and her parents finally got her hockey skates.
She hasn't looked back since. Kendall really started playing because her older brother got into it, and her parents had no idea what they were getting themselves into. Now as a parent herself reflecting on the journey, she recognizes just how much her mom and dad sacrificed—from her mom giving up her career to both parents working multiple jobs—so that she could pursue her dream of playing the game she loved.
