For the past five years, Indigenous cultural educator Nathan Lygon has worked with Rocky Hall preschool on the NSW far south coast to run a weekly program to teach local Aboriginal language and culture.
His teachings are embedded in the preschool’s teaching program throughout the week, with children using local Aboriginal language daily, even before they use English words for some native animals.
The children returned to preschool this year in the midst of devastating bushfires, which loomed on the edges of Rocky Hall and neighbouring towns for almost two months before eventually impacting the community.
Six months after the fires, as the forest gradually begins to heal, Nathan Lygon leads the children on an excursion to the heart of the fire ground at Myrtle Mountain to examine the tentative signs of regeneration and observe the fragility of the environment.
