The Riverina’s growing Muslim community are observing the holy month COVID-free.

Eased restrictions in regional New South Wales allowed the Muslim association in Wagga to organise a community iftar over the weekend where more than one hundred people gathered.

Community members went to the CSU recreation centre where they shared food, broke their fast and prayed together, something they couldn’t do last year.

According to the latest census data, Muslims in Wagga Wagga make up under one percent of the city’s population but that had doubled in five years.

Residents say events like the community iftar are becoming more popular as the Muslim population in Wagga grows steadily.
