Champion drone racer Zak Martin-Taylor says the sport helped him transition to life outside the army after he was medically discharged in 2019.
Once an avid rugby player, he joined the Australian Army Drone Racing Team and was hooked.
In August, North Queensland hosted the 2021 Australian X-Class Opens — the first national giant drone racing competition to be held in the country.
The three-day competition saw drone pilots with a range of skill levels take to the sky in experimental class drones that can reach speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour.
Both organiser and a participant in the competition, Mr Martin-Taylor took out this year's title. Young, potential pilots were encouraged to take part in the action using simulators to learn how to fly a drone.
