Travellers in central Queensland are doing a double take as gigantic colourful art sculptures greet them as they drive into Miriam Vale.

For too long, the tiny town midway between Rockhampton and Bundaberg has been little more than a fuel stop on a long road trip along the Bruce Highway.

But a first-of-its kind highway art installation is luring visitors to stop for longer and spend their money. Publican Mitch Brennan said it had made a huge difference to the community and its economy.

The Wrapt in Mugul project features five large-scale sculptures lining the Bruce Highway, stretching for 20 kilometres from Bororen, through Miriam Vale, and south to Gin Gin.

Once the highway sculptures have drawn traffic into town, drivers can find an art trail of smaller pieces lining the base of Mount Mugul.
