Cornell Gunter shared that the staff disregarded his fiance’s pleas. And though the baby wasn't moving when they came to the hospital, staff did not consider that she had a condition putting the pregnancy at risk.
Many others on social media detailed horror stories from the same hospital. Another Black mother had a similar story at the same hospital in 2016 after a difficult pregnancy, leaving her child’s brain without oxygen for too long.
Gunter is using the ordeal to call awareness to Black mothers being ignored by physicians. Black mothers are more likely to experience stillbirths than Hispanic and white women, according the the CDC, and often report being turned away or dismissed by hospital staff.
During Black Maternal Health Week, Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) and other Black women leaders discussed their experiences being turned away from hospitals. Bush said doctors didn't believe her when she said she was in pain.
