35:39Now PlayingPresident Donald Trump presented the Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, to retired pitcher Mariano Rivera on Monday, Sept. 16. The hall-of-famer played in the MLB for 19 years, including 17 seasons on the Yankees. After Trump listed a host of Rivera's achievements, the pitcher recounted how his teammates helped him learn English after coming to the U.S. from Panama. "Because I know the language, now I can relate with someone who is going through this same process that I have been," Rivera said. "I'm proud to be an American," he added.
