George Kent, a career diplomat currently serving as deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, said plainly in his opening statement to the House Intelligence Committee on Nov. 13, that he does "not believe the United States should ask other countries to engage in selective, politically associated investigations or prosecutions against opponents of those in power." These types of "selective actions undermine the rule of law regardless of the country," he added. Kent previously told House impeachment investigators in October that he was asked to "lay low" on policy decisions regarding Ukraine after a May meeting about the country between President Donald Trump and other officials.
