Rep. Val Demings, D-Fla., questioned Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, and George Kent, deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, in the first public hearing in the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. In response to questions from Demings, Kent said he believes Trump’s personal attorney Rudy Giuliani was “looking to dig up political dirt against a potential rival in the next election cycle.” The impeachment probe centers on a July phone call in which Trump asked him to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Both Kent and Taylor testified to lawmakers in October behind closed doors.
