Rep. Denny Heck, D-Wash., questioned George Kent, deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, and Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, in the first public hearing in the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. Heck asked Kent and Taylor how the U.S.' current policy goals laid can make their jobs harder. "When American leaders ask foreign governments to investigate their potential rivals, doesn't that make it harder for us to advocate on behalf of those democratic values?" Kent agreed, saying it affects diplomats' credibility when foreign governments hear one thing on the ground and hear something else from leaders. Taylor agreed. The probe centers around a July phone call in which Trump asked the president of Ukraine to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Both Kent and Taylor testified to lawmakers in October behind closed doors.
