Rep. Joaquin Castro, D-Texas, questioned George Kent, deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, and Bill Taylor, the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, in the first public hearing in the impeachment inquiry against President Donald Trump. In response to questions from Castro, Taylor said if Ukraine did not get aid from the U.S., it would have been in a much weaker position to oppose Russia. Castro asserted that those circumstances meant Ukraine’s president was “desperate” when he was part of a July phone call in which Trump asked him to investigate former vice president and 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Both Kent and Taylor testified to lawmakers in October behind closed doors.
